What is a Family Health Team (FHT)?
A Family Health Team is an approach to primary health care that brings together different health care providers to co-ordinate the highest possible quality of care for you - the patient. Designed to give doctors support from other complementary professionals, most Family Health Teams will consist of doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and other health care professionals who work collaboratively, each utilizing their experience and skills so that you receive the very best care, when you need it, as close to home as possible.
Do you know that you can request to see a Family Health Team Nurse Practitioner, Nurse, Social Worker, or Dietician for many of your medical problems? As well, you can request to see the Diabetes Nurse Educator or go to the Northwestern Health Unit instead of your doctor for certain problems. By accessing other professionals of the Red Lake health team, you not only receive specialized care, you may be seen more quickly and by the same health care provider each time you visit for the same issue.
As a member of the FHT, each professional can consult with a doctor if needed.

Our Family Health Team consists of two nurse practitioners, three nurses, a dietician, and a social worker who are colocated with a group of seven physicians. Although the physicians are not part of the FHT, we work together to provide hospital services, emergency care, and obstetrical services for the community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Not only do we just provide care in the clinic, but we also fulfill a number of other medical roles in the community.
We are a 'teaching practice' which means that you may be cared for by a medical student or resident (a doctor finishing their medical training), with the supervision of a fully licensed physician. We hope that introducing these 'doctors in training' to rural medicine will help them consider a career in small towns like ours. Finally, we have visiting 'locum' doctors who are fully qualified doctors that come to town on short contracts to work in place of one of our full time doctors.
