Travel
In general, Ontario Health Insurance (OHIP) does not cover vaccines for travel or travel health consultations.
However, vaccination against many common travel diseases such as Tetanus, Meningitis, Polio, Hepatitis B, Chicken Pox, Measles, and Mumps (amongst others) are part of the routine childhood immunization schedule in Canada, and are covered by Ontario Health Insurance. Rabies Vaccine is also covered by Ontario Health Insurance, but is not part of the routine immunization schedule.
To determine which vaccines are recommended for your destination area, go to www.travel.gc.ca, click on the 'Health' tab and enter your destination. They also list other travel suggestions and advisories for each region. Once you know what you need, travel prescriptions can be requested from the clinic. Please note that there is a $25.00 fee for each prescription (in addition to the cost of the vaccine itself). Appointments for travel advice are $50.00 and appointments for injections are $25.00 per person.
If you're not inclined to do the research yourself, travel health clinics are a great resource for travel health services, from general public travel health information and guidance, to specific vaccinations recommended by professionally-trained travel medicine staff. Although hardly convenient for residents in our area, there are travel clinics located in Winnipeg and Thunder Bay. Travel clinics also usually have associated fees for their services.
